Recently National Geographic’s Adventure Magazine selected Spearfish as one of the “Top 50 Best Places to Live and Play” and also one of only eight cities selected as a “Hot Spot” in America.
Spearfish takes pride in its extensive and progressive parks and recreation programs. When compared to communities of its size, Spearfish ranks near the top in acres of parks and green space per capita.
Bike path, park system anchor city
A 7.75-mile scenic bike and recreation path winds along Spearfish Creek through town. The Spearfish Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department maintains a total of 130 acres of parkland encompassing 26 developed parks, “pocket” parks, and sports field areas. In addition, Spearfish is home to the 756 acre mountain park land of Lookout Mountain.
Spearfish City Park is a large and very popular cultural and recreation spot. Situated along Spearfish Creek, it provides young and old with hours of recreation, on land and in the water. Younger, more adventurous residents and visitors, enjoy the 9,600-square-foot Skate Park.
Sports complex offers baseball, softball, soccer
Local softball teams and soccer teams practice and play on many well-maintained fields. A large local sports complex is host to city and regional events in baseball, softball and soccer.
The most recent development has been the construction of the Spearfish Rec and Aquatics Center. The 2-acre outdoor pools have slides and other outdoor water features. This new 60,000-square-foot facility is an added highlight to an already active sports community.
National forest serves as backyard playground
Spearfish also encourages a variety of fishing and hunting. Adjacent to town is a rifle range, an archery range, an eagle viewing area, and a multi-acre game production area that caters to turkey, deer and a variety of wildlife. The game production area has open hunting, with part being archery hunting only.
Spearfish Creek is an excellent blue-ribbon trout stream that is home to three varieties of trout: brown, rainbow and brook. Fishing abounds within town and throughout Spearfish Canyon. And the best part is, in South Dakota the fishing season never closes!
Spearfish has been named a Mountain Biking Mecca in several publications and is home to South Dakota’s largest mountain biking marathon. Several local businesses and manufacturers cater to the mountain bike enthusiast. Speaking of marathons, find a running/walking marathon just about every month, including December, in Spearfish! They range from easy to difficult, short to long, Lookout Mountain to Spearfish Canyon.
Two beautiful golf courses in Spearfish
Golfers can enjoy both an 18-hole and 9-hole course within the city limits, both with spectacular views. Or enjoy one of the 20 other golf courses in the Black Hills, twisting through pine forests, across rushing trout streams and opening up to mountain vista views. Disc golf is also an option, with two courses in town.
Within a few minutes drive of town is access to 350-miles of marked, mapped and groomed snowmobile trails that weave through the Black Hills National Forest. It is easy to find a three to four foot base of snow for winter fun, including some of the best cross-country ski trails and recreation areas for downhill skiing enthusiasts. There are also ample opportunities for ice & rock climbing, downhill and Alpine skiing, snow shoeing, snow kayaking and more!
Trails serve ATVs, hiking
